connect to the beltway. over to the rails, metro, marc, vre running today. so far with no reported delays. eun, over to you. >> danella, thank you. 5:01. we're following breaking news. the top american commander in afghanistan is implicated in the scandal that brought down now former cia director david petraeus. the pentagon says it is investigating inappropriate communications between general john allen and jill kelley, the woman that petraeus' mistress allegedly sent threatening e-mails to you. the fbi reportedly uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 allegedly inappropriate e-mails between allen and kelley. she's a social liaison at the military base in florida. the general insists he's friends with kelley, but paula broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. the fbi is keeping quiet of a search of broadwell's home. agents searched her home for five hours last night. they left with several boxes. broadwell's relationship with petraeus first came to light

when the fbi began investigating jill kelley's claims that broadwell had sent her threatening e-mails. and the fbi is putting together a time line of the investigation to explain to members of congress why they were kept out of the loop until recently. they didn't know about the probe until last tuesday even though it had been going on for months. senate intelligence chair dianne feinstein said she learned about it from the media last week. meantime, she says petraeus will still testify before the committee about last month's deadly attack on the embassy in libya. petraeus was supposed to testify about benghazi this week. a deadly night in northeast washington has four people in the hospital. it stems from a triple stabbing and a shooting just three miles apart. the stabbing happened in the 300 block of 51st street just after 1:00 this morning. when police arrived, they found two women and one child with stab wounds. all are expected to be okay. no word on a suspect. then just minutes later, police

got calls for shots fired in the 2000 block of "c" street. that's where police found a man shot in the chest. he is in critical condition. no word on a motive in that case. today is sentencing day for former d.c. council chair kwame brown. he'll be sentenced in two different courtrooms for two different charges. first brown will learn his fate for a federal bank charge he pled guilty to in june and admitted he lied on applications to obtain bank loans. he faces up to six months in prison. prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence him to just six days in jail because he has been cooperative. brown will also be sentenced in superior court on a misdemeanor campaign violation. he faces up to six months behind bars on that charge as well. four minutes after the hour. today the trial will begin for a bowie state university student charged with murdering her roommate. alexis simpson is accused o stabbing her roommate dominique frazier in september of last year. the two got into an argument over the volume of an ipod.

simpson's attorney says she was acting in self-defense and shouldn't be charged with murder. in about five hours, we expect d.c. to announce that more than a dozen schools will be closing for good. schools chancellor khai ya henderson will make the announcement at 8:00 this morning. as many as 19 schools could be on that list. they're being targeted because of low enrollment and poor performance. the students who attend those schools will be consolidated into other schools. this is the first major round of school closures since 2008 when then chancellor michelle rhee closed 12 schools. a ribbon cutting ceremony for the long anticipated 495 express lanes. those lanes will help ease congestion for drivers moving between springfield and tyson's corner. the lanes don't officially open until saturday. that multi-billion project allows drivers who are car pooling to avoid paying tolls.

montgomery county executive isaiah leggett says a rapid bus system is too expensive to build. leggett says the proposed ten-route system couldn't be built in what he called a reasonable time frame. they say the system could be up running in the next 30 years to help ease congestion in heavy traffic areas like rockville pike. it is now 5:06. 46 degrees. a scandal rocking sesame street. the accusations that have one puppeteer off the job.

a sentence of shame starts today for an ohio woman. sheena hardin was caught driving on a sidewalk to pass a school bus. now she has to stand at a nearby intersection carrying a sign that says only an idiot would

breaking news in syria. an air raid carried out by syrian forces killed one person and injured three others. this was near the turkish border. the jet struck the area five times in ten minutes. this is the second time in two days syria bombed the rebel held

region. turkey says the attacks are endangering its security. the violence in syria has killed more than 36,000 people since an uprising against syrian president bashar al assad's regime back last year. new this morning, a rocket attack killed at least one person in afghanistan. police say at least four rockets hit the northeast section of ka dull. the attack happened near an intelligence service office building and a private tv station. insurgents occasionally launch rockets into the city, but the weapons are not very accurate. today palestinians began the process of exhuming former president yasser arafat's body. they started removing stones from the tomb, a process that will take two weeks. it's part of the investigation into his death. arafat's wife believes he was poisoned. a swiss institute said they found high levels of a radioactive element on his clothing. the leader died in 2004 after falling seriously ill. police in ohio believe a custody dispute led to a

murder/suicide involving five people. investigators found a man, his mother, and his three children dead inside a garage yesterday. all five died from carbon monoxide poisoning. police say the three children were living with their grandparents for a while, but their parents were trying to regain custody. the founder of the popular anti-virus software mcafee is the prime suspect of the murder of his neighbor in belize. john mcafee says he's innocent after his neighbor was shot this weekend. a report says mcafee is worried for his safety and fears he will be murdered if he turns himself in. mcafee founded mcafee anti-virus in 1987. the puppeteer that brings elmo to life is on leave of absence after allegations of a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy. kevin clash has been the voice of elmo since the 1980s. the 23-year-old first made the charges back in june. in a written statement,

52-year-old clash said the allegations are falts and defamatory. he writes, "i had a relationship with the accuser. it was between two consenting adults, and i am deeply saddened that he's trying to characterize it as something other than it was." investigators are looking at gas meters and pipe lines, trying to figure out what caused the deadly house explosion in indianapolis. one homeowner says his faulty furnace may be to blame. a couple that lived next door died in that blast. investigators have not ruled out anything here, but they do not believe a meth lab exploded and started that fire. nearly 30 homes in that neighborhood were ge daed. some of the 200 people evacuated have now returned to our homes. lawmakers in new york city will vote today on a $500 million worth of repairs to the city following super storm sandy. the money will go to installing electrical systems. mayor michael bloomberg says the city has already spent more than $130 million worth of storm

repair and relief. they will keep it in place for now as it helps cut down on massive lines. sandy has cut down on things already. the storm destroyed more than 3,000 trees. the owner has already refunded more than 70% of its orders, costing him around $40,000. parts of italy under water after heavy rain swept through that region. look at this. hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes in tuscany. roads virtually impassable with crews having to save one person by helicopter. same rain put 70% of venice under water on sunday. this morning rescue crews will try again to rescue two snowboarders stranded on mt. rainier. the two men called for help on sunday when they got lost in a storm. yesterday crews spotted them, but it was getting dark, and the weather made the rescue too risky. the men appear to be okay. they have winter gear and have built a snow cave. new developments in the

nationwide meningitis outbreak. the fda says it's made multiple disturbing findings at the massachusetts plant linked to the outbreak. investigators say they found leaky ceilings, insects, and even a bird inside a room where the drugs are stored. they also said the company did not investigate 53 incidents of outbreak inside the facility. they are responsible for 19 deaths from meningitis in the united states. it may not be necessary for patients to go hungry when getting ready for cholesterol screenings. for years doctors have advised patients to fast leading up to cholesterol checks. now researchers at the university of calgary are rethinking that. they found they little difference in results between those who ate and those who did not. we did screenings here earlier this fall, and i was worried about that because i eat in the morning. >> so do i. >> but they said it's okay.

tracie potts is live on capitol hill with details. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: we're talking about general john allen who took over for petraeus in afghanistan. he's now wrapped up in this as well. overnight while traveling, the defense secretary leon panetta announced the military is now investigating allen as well, and senior military officials tell us it's because over a two-year period there were thousands, 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails between allen and jill kelley. k keep in mind jill kelley is the woman that touched off the fbi investigation that led to the resignation of petraeus. she's the one that claimed she was getting harassing e-mails, and when the fbi looked into that, they traced those e-mails back to paula broadwell. as they were looking at her e-mails, they realized she was having an affair with general petraeus, and both of them in interviews with the fbi have admitted that. so back to allen. allen now under investigation for the e-mails that the pentagon says are potentially

inappropriate. he denies any sort of inappropriate contact or e-mailing or relationship with jill kelley, but now his own senate confirmation is on hold. ironically, before all this happened, he was already here in washington for senate confirmation on thursday. he was being moved up to oversee troops in europe. now that's on hold, and the person who was replacing him in afghanistan, that one is now on a fast track although for now secretary panetta says he will remain in his job in charge in afghanistan pending the outcome of this investigation. eun? >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. tracie, thank you. congress is back in session today. lawmakers will begin discussions on a deal to avert a potential economic disaster. they have to reach an agreement by the end of the year to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts would automatically take effect. economists fear that could plunge our economy into a deep

recession. congressional leaders say they're confident they could get a deal done. firefighters rescue at least one person from a house in washington. it broke out just after midnight on the 1700 block of benning road. firefighters say the small kitchen fire caused heavy smoke. three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. they're expected to be okay. 5:34 right now. two cars hit and killed a 42-year-old woman trying to cross the street in prince george's county. the deadly accident last night in the 3800 block of kenilworth avenue in bladensburg. the victim mary harding was not in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. no word on whether the drivers will face any charges. a car also hit a woman crossing the street in montgomery county. police say she was walking along georgia avenue north of randolph road in silver spring when the car hit her. investigators believe the woman was not in the crosswalk. the driver did stay on the scene. his 10-year-old son was in the car with him. the woman was taken to the

hospital in critical condition. a guilty plea is expected today from the east coast rapist. aaron thomas is expected to take responsibility for the 2009 attack on three teenage trick or treaters in prince william county. he's accused of forcing them into the woods and raping two of them on halloween night. thomas is expected to enter a second guilty plea in a different case in loudoun county at the end of the month. both cases carry life sentences. this could be a very long day for kwame brown. the former d.c. council chairman will be sentenced on a federal bank fraud charge. he retired in june from the d.c. city council. brown admitted to lying on applications to get bank loans. he faces up to six months in prison on that charge. but prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence him to just six days behind bars. brown will also be sentenced in d.c. superior court on a misdemeanor campaign violation. he faces up to six months in jail on that charge as well. 5:35 now. 46 degrees. more to the saying you don't

and injured three others in frederick county, maryland. the crash happened yesterday afternoon near route 75 and ed mcclain road in the monrovia area. from chopper 4, you can see the tractor-trailer loaded with oranges that overturned on a pickup truck. two people inside that truck died on the scene. passengers in the truck and tractor-trailer were taken to the hospital. no word on their conditions. police arrested watson pierre after he was released from the hospital last night. he was behind the wheel of the tractor-trailer. pierre faces several charges, including criminally negligent homicide. an online petition requesting texas to withdraw from the united states received enough signatures for the white house to respond. it asks president obama to grant the secession. it has received more than 34,000 signatures, and any petition filed with whitehouse.gov that gets more than 25,000 signatures

gets an official response. george allen dupt know what's next for him, but one thing he has decided is he will not run for political office then. the former governor and senator lost the senate race to tim kaine last week by more than 200,000 votes. he told the richmond dispatch and he and his wife poured their hearts into this campaign, and they're trying to figure out the next step. a proposed rapid bus system in montgomery county is too expensive and will take too long to build. that's according to county executive isaiah leggett. he says that ten-route system couldn't be built in what he calls a reasonable time frame. county planners say the system could be up in the next 30 years. that will help ease congestion through heavily traveled areas like rockville pike. virginia state police slowing down one program to bust speeders. they're skimming back on their aerial traffic enforcement because it's too expensive. the missions involve small

farther west, a band of more moderate showers not quite as heavy, just west of leesburg, loudoun county. and one little pocket of modern rain just northeast of warrenton. that's going to be passing right near hay market over the past half hour or so. these are moving north and east. it has tapered off and ended. much of western maryland and west virginia drying out. farther south, northern neck, lower part of the eastern shore and that area just getting a few sprinkles right now. more moderate rain heading your way too in the next few hours. it is chilly. low and mid-40s all around the area. that includes suburbs of prince george's, fairfax, prince william counties. have an umbrella handy. you're going to need your winter coat. by 7:00 a.m., still rainy, chilly, and the winds gusting 15, 20 miles an hour. we'll still be in the low to mid-40s for the next few hours. and the rest of the day, it is going to be chilly. in fact, about 25 degrees colder than it was yesterday. for the lunch hour, drying out, this rain should be ending by 9:00 this morning.
